Into our second season already and still going strong!! The youngest section of the Lower Wharfe Canoe Club family polo has really taken some of our slightly older young people by storm; this quick action packed sport is a cross between 5-a-side football and rugby, in boats. Teams start by trying to get the ball into the oppositions goal which is suspended above the water, to score you must avoid the other team (and avoid getting pushed in) and work as a team to get the ball into the oppositions net.

Polo training has now begun at Tadcaster pool on Friday evenings, though could all those interested come down to the Sunday night sessions before attending the Friday night sessions.

I think this photo from Teesside 2009 shows the lovely 'basher' getting well and truly bashed!!

Most of the time however the club runs trips to rivers such as Sleningford at a nice grade 2 (Gentle moving water), Linton Locks, the River Lune etc... Club trips are open to all members based on ability, you won’t know if you like it or not until you have tried it!!

“Does anybody fancy a slightly longer paddle?” was the question posed by one of our club members at the back end of 2006.

A steady band of men (and women) joined the call and we are now a thriving section of the club.  We run day trips, and weekends away where the accommodation is usually YHA.  The stamina required is not for the longer paddle so much as the necessity to eat cake, as elevenses is integral to our paddling!

We have four club boats available for hire, and a day’s paddle is usually between 8 and 14 miles.  So, do you fancy a slightly longer paddle?

One of our two competitive areas, slalom is a fast exhilarating sport where competitors must navigate a river whilst passing through gates along their way!!

In most competitions a paddler has two runs both of which are timed; penalties are awarded for hitting gates and also for missing gates.

This fast sport is an Olympic discipline; our most experienced paddlers will hopefully be competing at the 2012 Olympics in London!!

Now where would any self respecting club be without a trusty social side to fall back on. After all we all enjoy paddling, but sometimes you just need a break from it all, how does bowling sound? What about paintballing? Maybe some go-karting? you never know until you have tried it!!

Apart from the larger activities mentioned here the club usually ends up at a pub after a hard night on the river, or at Magnets after each pool evening a relaxing end to a successful days (or nights) paddling!!

Pool Evenings

Pool Evenings

Events: 1

Pool sessions take place on Sunday evenings from 6.30 - 8.30pm consisting of three 40 minute sessions. The cost is £3.50 for members and £4.50 for non-members. The sessions are pre-booked and pre-paid. The sessions run from September until May, and all new paddlers must undertake a safety test. This ensures the paddlers' understanding of pool procedures and canoe safety, for example capsizing and entering or exiting the pool safely. These sessions are informal with instructors available. Paddlers are encouraged to develop at their own pace and ask for instructors as required when their confidence and abilities develop. Our main aim is for you to have fun and enjoy your canoeing safely

Thursday night paddles commence in May and continue until the end of August from 6.45 to approximately 8.30pm. This is the time when the skills learnt in the pool can be put into practice on the River Ouse at Bishopthorpe in York. This is the base for the clubs river trips and the area where equipment is issued. Trips can go up or down the river for approximatley 2 miles and the long distance group go further up river for the approximately 5 miles. Fun games such as Polo and raft games are played on a Thursday night and star testing can also be done during these sesions to gain skill proficiency awards.

This is followed by a trip to the local pub where many people go for a chat and sandwhich after the nights fun!
